Captain Brian Horrell (AirNZ) was in the flight-deck jump-seat of A320 ZK-OJL when an as-yet unknown upset caused a crash into the ocean when on approach to land at Perpignan, France on 29.11.2008. All aboard were lost. The aircraft was on an acceptance flight after termination of its lease to Excel Airways of Germany and had recently been repainted in AirNZ livery.
I have fond memories of flying with Brian many years ago in Te Anau. Was fortunate enough to do quite a bit of training with him on wheels and in his U206-G ZK-EFI on EDO floats, including one very memorable trip into Lake Hankinson to pick up some hunters.
Brian will be remembered by many not only for his skill as a pilot and consummate airmanship, but his humility, grace, humour and strength of character.
Our hearts go out to Shelley and the children, and of course Brian's extended family.

Remember:
only 3 things in aviation are ever of absolutely no use to you...
runway behind you,
altitude above you, and
air in your tanks.
Stay safe up there!
Keep it straight with rudder
